German organist Christian SCHMITT, serves as the 3rd Weiwuying Organ Festival's Artistic Director, has meticulously planned three concerts of different forms and styles. The first concert, titled SCHMITT and His Friends: One Night in Classic Baroque, utilizes different combinations of musical instruments to capture the colorful charm of organ music. The second concert is titled A Fantasy of Dance, the first half of which features boundary-breaking interpretations of dance music pieces in different styles, while the second half is a creative silent film performance that showcases the time-honored tradition of improvised organ performance. The third concert, A Matinee with Masters: Concerto Classics, features three organ concertos of different styles—Romantic, contemporary, and boundary-breaking—and demonstrates the pipe organ's title as the king of instruments through its dominating presence over the orchestra.

The pipe organ is one of the world's oldest instruments, dating back to as early as the 3 rd century BC in Greece. Since it has a majestic, dignified sound, which is even more pronounced by the echo in large churches, along with its variance in timbre, it became an important presence in Christianity beginning in the Middle Ages, in turn prompting the composition of a great number of pieces over time.
\n\nAs missionaries brought their faith out of Europe, the organ followed to churches all over the world—over 30 can be found in Taiwanese churches. Now that Western classical music is a popular genre, almost all concert halls are built with an organ, allowing people all over to hear the grandeur of this fascinating instrument.
\n\nSimilarly, an organ was also put into the plans for Weiwuying.Century-old German organ manufacturer Johannes Klais Orgelbau built the instrument, which has 9,085 pipes and 127 stops, over a period of a bit more than three years.Being perfectly blended into the vineyard seating as the cherry on top, it never fails to stun world-class organists from around the globe!

Ever since I had the great honor to help inaugurate the largest pipe organ in Asia at the National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts (Weiwuying) in 2018, this magnificent instrument and its home at the Weiwuying Concert Hall hold a special place in my heart. I am all the more thrilled to be able to invite you to the 2nd Weiwuying Organ Festival - the first edition of the Festival to take place for a live audience!
\nAs the Festival's artistic director in 2023, I have the pleasure to present to you an array of insightful musical programs spanning throughout the centuries of organ literature. The brilliant organs of the Weiwuying Concert Hall and Pingtung County Performing Arts Center can be heard in various formats, in solo recital, orchestral concert as well as in an education concert inviting you to take a closer look at the organ, its secrets and intricacies. A personal highlight is the guest appearance of Martynas LEVICKIS on the accordion, one of the organ's closest relatives in the family of instruments, who joins me in a duo concert at the organ at Weiwuying Concert Hall.
\nI am grateful to General and Artistic Director CHIEN Wen-pin of the National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts (Weiwuying) and his entire team for giving the organ this wonderful spotlight centerstage – and look forward to welcoming you at the 2nd Weiwuying Organ Festival!

This concert will be chamber music with organ, in which different instruments—trumpet, flute, and piano—are used to showcase the many faces of the organ. The pieces to be performed include HANDEL's Suite in D Major, W. F. BACH's Flute Sonata in e minor, and LISZT's Les Préludes for organ and piano. The concert also features solo performances, including BACH's famous Toccata and Fugue in d minor, as well as his Chromatic Fantasia and Fugue for piano.
\n\nThe organist is Christian SCHMITT, the Artistic Director of the Weiwuying Organ Festival, who made his first visit to Weiwuying in 2023. The pianist is Grammy nominated Joseph MOOG, and the flutist is Tatjana RUHLAND of the Principal Flute of SWR Symphony Orchestra. Additionally, HOU Chuan-an, acclaimed trumpet player from Taiwan, has also been invited to perform at the festival.
\n\nThe combination of trumpet and organ can be considered a perfect match of bright, brilliant timbre, while the combination of flute and organ delivers the gentle grace of woodwind instruments and the combination of organ and piano shows an energetic clash between the two kings of instruments. The pipe organ can be both exuberant and sentimental. Join us to experience the different qualities of organ music!

\n\n\n\n

The silent film played in the second half of this concert is a protected film, containing fighting and theft scenes. It is recommended that children under 6 years old not watch it. Children over 6 years old and under 12 years old need to be accompanied by parents, teachers or adult relatives and friends to watch.
\n\tSimultaneous recording during the performance of this program.
\n\tA Fantasy of Dance program will depart from the religious and solemn nature of stereotypical organ music and showcase the instrument's playful and fun side. The first part of the concert performed by Dutch organist Aart BERGWERFF will consist of dance music pieces performed on organ, including famous tango pieces composed by PIAZZOLLA, Tango, and a selection from The Firebird composed by STRAVINSKY, as well as Dutch composer Simeon ten HOLT's most popular work Canto Ostinato.
\n\nAlthough improvisation was once considered a requirement among concertists, it is a quality scarcely found in today's classical music that seeks to remain faithful to original compositions and give accurate performances. Thankfully, this practice can still be found in organ music, in which in addition to the spontaneous performances still given in church services, organs also played the indispensable role of musical accompaniment in the silent film era. Therefore in the second half of the concert, the Concert Hall will transform into a movie theater as organist Hayo BOEREMA of the St. Lawrence Church in Rotterdam takes the audience on a journey back to the beginning of the 20th century. With his improvised live performance accompanying the silent film, BOEREMA will guide the audience to feel the reality of the here and now and relive the glory of the silent era.

Artists Introduction
\n\nOrgan|Aart BERGWERFF
\n\nAart BERGWERFF is a passionate and versatile musician. He loves exciting and adventurous programming. On the one hand, Aart has a passion for the classical repertoire and on the other, he likes to search for new ways and forms in organ culture. For example, he regularly collaborates with Dutch video artist Jaap DRUPSTEEN. With the Turkish Dervish dancer Kadir SONUK, he created the performance East meets West, set to music from Canto Ostinato by Simeon ten HOLT. Another example is the production Mi Corazón, in which organ and tango dance meet.
\n\nBERGWERFF has been organist of the Grote of Onze-Lieve-Vrouwe-Kerk in Breda since 2012. As a concert organist, he frequently performs at concerts and festivals at home and abroad.
\nAs a teacher, BERGWERFF is connected to the Rotterdam Conservatory, part of Codarts,University for the Arts. There he has been professor for organ and arranging since 1994.
\nAs organist, he is often a guest of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, the Philharmonie Zuid-Nederland and the Bamberger Symphoniker.
BERGWERFF studied organ, choral conducting and church music at the Rotterdam Conservatory. At the Royal Conservatory, The Hague, he studied improvisation with Bert MATTER. He continued his organ studies in Paris with Marie-Claire ALAIN and in northern Germany with Harald VOGEL. He concluded his studies in Paris by obtaining the Prix de Virtuosité.
\n\nIn 2003, he was awarded the silver medal of the Société Académique "Arts, Sciences et Lettres" for his achievements in French organ culture.
\n\n\n\n
Organ|Hayo BOEREMA
\n\nAward-winning and internationally acclaimed organist and composer, Hayo BOEREMA, from Rotterdam, The Netherlands, is the organist titular of the largest organ of The Netherlands: the Markussen organ of the St. Lawrence Church in Rotterdam.
\n\nAs a prolific performer, BOEREMA won various international organ contests in Europe during 1998-2005. In 2009, he was awarded the Silver Medal of the Academic Society for Education and Encouragement of the Arts and Sciences in Paris for his achievements as a performer of French organ music.
\n\nFostering the organ to be introduced and appreciated by a wider audience, is what inspires Hayo BOEREMA as organist, lecturer and composer. In his musical interpretations, BOEREMA is always motivated to look for contrast and color in compositions of both established and contemporary composers to involve a traditional classical music audience as well as a more experimentally curious audience. BOEREMA's repertoire stretches a long time period. It includes Jan Pieterszoon SWEELINCK and BACH as well as more contemporary composers, with a particular interest in Olivier MESSIAEN and French organ music from the 20th century.
\n\nAs a performer, BOEREMA often joins forces with choirs and orchestras. Additionally, he is regularly commissioned to compose. One of his major compositions, his Solemn Mass (Messe Solennelle), a composition for organ, choir, vocal soloist and percussion, was recorded recently and received with wide acclaim.
\n\nIn addition to his performances, BOEREMA is professor of organ at Codarts Conservatory at Rotterdam. He gives master classes in interpretation and improvisation internationally. Also, he is welcomed as a jury member at various international organ competitions.

The rich and booming timber of the organ is comparable to that of an orchestra. However, the instrument's scarcity poses quite a challenge for composers creating new pieces, or for soloists rehearsing with an orchestra; as a result, organ concertos are very few in number. The grand finale of Weiwuying Organ Festival brings performances on a never-before-seen scale, featuring three organ concertos as well as pieces for flute, piano and orchestra in a feast for music lovers.
\n\nThe three organ concertos to be performed vary in the styles and instrumentations. These concertos are: Guillaume CONNESSON's Concerto da Requiem, composed for a grand symphony orchestra; RHEINBERGER's Organ Concerto No. 1, arranged for strings and three French horns; PIAZZOLLA's Aconcagua Concerto, rearranged from the version for bandoneon. The concert also features FRANCK's Symphonic Variations and CHAMINADE's Concertino for Flute, Op. 107, both pieces are unique and loved by the audiences. Five world-class musicians will perform on the same stage, along with the Kaohsiung Symphony Orchestra, conducted by CHIEN Wen-pin, Artistic Director of Weiwuying. With all the talents involved, this performance is definitely one to look forward to.

\n\n
